Feb 8    Toastmasters Club
TOASTMASTERS INTERNATIONAL

When many people hear about Toastmasters, they often think that it is only for people who want to become professional speakers.

But that couldn't be further from the truth.

Toastmasters is an organization devoted to helping people improve their communication and leadership skills.

Yes, public speaking is part of that. But it is really just the beginning. Here are some other things Toastmasters can help you with:

Have you been told you don't listen well? Learn how to improve your listening skills through regular practice at our meetings.

Do you have an upcoming presentation you'll be giving for work? We can give you an opportunity to practice that speech, and offer some constructive feedback so when you give the "real" presentation, you nail it.

Do you freeze up when asked questions during meetings? Our meetings feature opportunities to give short, ad hoc speeches that will help you thaw out those situations.

Are you getting ready to take on a leadership role at work, or are you hoping for a promotion that takes you there? We can help you hone your leadership skills so you can be successful in that role.

Do you need to improve your communication style to be more concise and clear? We can provide feedback that will help you meet that goal.

In short: if one of your goals is to improve your leadership or communication skills, we can help!

Come visit one of our next meetings and we'll show you how.

Background for chamber members - the Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce is the historic sponsor of Toastmasters in our region.  We encourage chamber members to utilize the club's programming to help improve your organizations.

Feb 8    Understanding Your Customers through Journey Mapping
Explore one of the best ways to truly understand your customers: Journey Mapping Today, the customer journey is much more complex and varies widely across different organizations and customer segments. It is no longer the product that is the focal point; it is the experience the company delivers. The Performance Excellence Network is pleased to welcome Jeri Meola, CEO of SMS Research, to our February 8 St. Paul PEN breakfast discussion: “Understanding Your Customers through Journey Mapping.” The presentation will be a guide to help you develop a customer journey map for your customers’ experience that will allow you to view your organization and its process through their eyes. What is Journey Mapping? A customer journey map is a visual representation of the journey a customer has with your brand, products, services, and people. It includes multiple touchpoints from the customer’s point of view, such as: Key moments and evaluation points in the process Positive and negative components of the experience Attitudes and emotions that may come into play LEARN - Identify how journey maps can help you understand more about critical customer needs - Learn how leading companies used these maps to both improve their customer experience. - Recognize the value of confirming customer perceptions of the journey rather than relying on a corporate hypothesis. Leave with new tools to put into action right away! The discussion is at Metro State University in the Student Center (details provided at registration). Continental breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 8:00 with the presentation from 8:00 to 9:00 am. No cost for members; $30 for non-members. To register, contact Brian Lassiter at brian.lassiter@performanceexcellencenetwork.org. Livestreaming (free) and video-on-demand ($20 for members) are now also available (discounted annual subscriptions are available and Premium/Sponsoring Members are free). Feb 17    Legislative Breakfast on Health Care
Obamacare: Repeal and Replace, with what?

Our February 2017 breakfast will focus on health care insurance, access to health care, and related issues.

Guest Speakers
Twila Brase,  President of Citizens Council on Health Care Freedom

Kerri Gordon, Director, Health Policy and Government Affairs

Moderator:
Rep. Jennifer Schulz
About the Speakers

Twila Brase
Twila Brase is president and co-founder of the Citizens' Council for Health Freedom (CCHF), a national organization based in St. Paul, Minnesota supporting health care choices, individualized patient care and medical and genetic privacy.

In August 2009, Modern Healthcare named her #75 on their "100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare" list. Her efforts led to a 2014 parent consent law for federally-funded research using newborn DNA and a viral CCHF billboard campaign ("Obamacare Games"). Her efforts have helped 38 states refuse ACA exchanges, stopped government-issued treatment directives, added consent requirements for online access to patient data, drawn national awareness to nationwide genetic privacy violations regarding newborn DNA, and led to successful lawsuits in Minnesota and Texas against illegal state storage, use, and dissemination of newborn DNA ("Baby DNA") for genetic research without parent consent.
In September 2014, Ms. Brase received the "Freedom of Informed Choice" award at the Sacred Fire of Liberty Gala and Award Ceremony in Maryland. In October 2013, Ms. Brase received the 2013 Eagle Forum's Eagle Award for Minnesota. Ms. Brase's "Health Freedom Minute" is heard on over 400 radio stations in 45 states. She provides testimony at state legislatures, meets with members of Congress, and speaks around the country.

She also testified before a federal committee against HIPAA's national patient identification number. Her article "Blame Congress for HMOs" has been placed into the Congressional Record of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Ms. Brase holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Nursing from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, specialized in emergency room nursing, and is a certified public health nurse.

Kerri Gordon
Kerri joined Allina Health in March of 2010.  In her role as Director of Government Affairs, Kerri oversees all local, state and federal public policy efforts on behalf of Allina Health. Prior to her work at Allina, Kerri oversaw public affairs for Clearway Minnesota. Previous work included lobbying for a firm in Washington, D.C., and working for the Minnesota Senate.

In 2002, Gordon received her Master's in Public Policy from the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota.  Gordon attended American University in Washington, DC where she earned her undergraduate degree. She lives in Minnetonka with her husband and sons.

Via the chamber's role of "Business Advocacy" the chamber hosts these gatherings to bring public officials and the business community together to explore collaboration, to learn from each other, and to air issues of concern which impact Minnesota's business climate.
